Czech Republic

The Czech Republic offers a valuable citizenship by descent program allowing individuals with Czech or Czechoslovak ancestry to reclaim their citizenship and obtain a European Union passport.

If you can prove descent from a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent who was a Czechoslovak citizen (or born in present-day Czech Republic before 1993), you may qualify for Czech citizenship, granting you visa-free travel to 185 countries and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU. Official processing time: 8 months.

This program honors the millions of Czechs who emigrated during communist rule or for economic reasons over the past century. The key requirement: your ancestor must not have voluntarily renounced their Czechoslovak or Czech citizenship. Czech Republic recognizes dual citizenship without restrictions, so you keep your current nationality while gaining Czech/EU citizenship benefits. Only biological descendants may apply (spouses are not eligible through this pathway).

Our expert team at CitizenX handles your entire journey – from navigating complex Czech laws and conducting archival research to liaising with Czech authorities and delivering your Czech passport. Contact us today to discover if your Czech roots qualify you for European citizenship.

Eligibility – Who Qualifies?

You qualify for Czech citizenship by descent if you are a direct biological descendant of an ancestor who meets ALL of the following criteria:

✓ Parent, Grandparent, or Great-Grandparent (three generations accepted)

✓ Was a Czechoslovak citizen (born in the territory of present-day Czech Republic before 1993), OR was a Czech citizen (1993-present)

✓ Did NOT voluntarily renounce Czechoslovak or Czech citizenship

Important Restrictions:

  • Spouses are NOT eligible through this pathway
  • Only biological descendants may apply
  • Ancestor must not have voluntarily given up citizenship (involuntary loss due to forced emigration, persecution, etc. does NOT disqualify you)

Historical Context:

Your ancestor may have been:

  • Subject of Austria-Hungary who became Czechoslovak citizen in 1918
  • Czechoslovak citizen during First Republic (1918-1938)
  • Citizen who fled Nazi occupation or communism (1938-1989)
  • Citizen of Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (1948-1989)
  • Czech citizen after Velvet Revolution (1989) or Czech-Slovak split (1993)

Communist-Era Emigrants: Many who fled during communist period (1948-1989) did not voluntarily renounce citizenship – they were often stripped of citizenship or forced to flee. These cases often qualify.
